On Unfortunate Choices for Brand Names

I saw a case of Coca-Cola’s latest offering, “Sprite Remix Aruba Jam”, when I stopped at Publix on the way home from work this evening. I really hope they’re not trying to market this in Mountain Brook.

20 Questions

Just try it. This one’s pretty well done.

Cyan Worlds Closes

About a week ago I added Cyan Worlds’ Headquarters as one of my 43 places. Today I read on Slashdot that, as of last Friday, they’ve closed. (Actually, it’s the second time in as many days that Slashdot’s reported this news, but if you’re a regular reader of Slashdot, you’re used to that sort of redundancy in their reporting).

The fifth and last installment in the Myst series, Myst V: End of Ages, is due to be released by Ubisoft on September 20. Beenox Studios is developing the Mac OS X version of Myst V and lists its target release date as September 20 as well.

Trying to get exited about Google Talk

Yesterday (was it just yesterday?) Google announced the beta release of Google Talk, their instant messaging service. Actually, there’s more to it than just IM; it also does Voice over IP (VoIP), which I’ve been meaning to look into for a while now.

I’m trying to get excited about this. I’m a fan of Google and especially some of their other services (like Gmail and Google Maps). But for some reason, I never got into the IM habit, and as far as I know, none of my friends are really into it either. Is this a generational thing? It seems like its mostly younger people (where I of course define “young” as “under the age of 30″) who are really leading the way on this.

USPS Mini-Rant

Would it be just completely pointless if I went to the local postmaster and asked him why the item that was originally shipped from The Sharper Image some six weeks ago has only just now arrived? Yes, I guess it would.

Arrested Development Coming Back?

According to this E! Online article from Kristin Veitch, it looks “very likely” that Arrested Development has been picked up for not only one but two full seasons. That’s pretty good news, considering it’s Friday 13th. It’s also suggested that the show will move to a new time slot, which is probably a wise idea (maybe as a lead-in to House?).

P.S. I promise that I’ll come up with some topic other than the fate of Arrested Development for the next post.

Get Arrested

Sometimes, you have to take a stand for the things that are really important in life. That’s why I’m taking time out from the important work of this Web log to let you know about the campaign to save “Arrested Development”, one of the funniest shows on TV right now.

Like a lot of great shows from years gone by, it’s won a number of awards but is nevertheless at risk of cancellation. In a promising move, however, FOX has recently launched the “Get Arrested” Web site to help promote the show and presumably get a feel for how many fans the show really has. I only recently found out about the show myself, and rented the first season on DVD to watch over a long weekend. If you’ve never seen the show, that’s probably the best way to get introduced to the characters and a lot of the background for what’s currently going on in the show (which is now wrapping up its second season). If you’re already a fan, take a minute to visit the Web site and take the Arrested Development Loyalty Oath.

Watchmen Movie Web Site Launched

It has seemed for a while now that the Watchmen movie was doomed, but it looks like Paramount has recently launched an official Web site for the movie. Paul Greengrass is the latest in a long series of directors associated with this project, David Hayter‘s is the latest screenplay, and as for casting, well, nothing official and the rumors are just out of control.

I hope they don’t screw this up.

Latest Hitchhiker’s Trailer On-Line

The latest trailer for the H2G2 movie has been posted. Very nice. Can’t wait until April 29!

What’s New in FOX 1.4: The Plan

It’s been close to a month since the FOX 1.4.0 release and I still haven’t begun putting together a “What’s New” document to help folks (including myself) make the transition to that version. The reality is that if I take the same approach as I did for the FOX 1.2 release, and wait until I’ve documented all of the changes before releasing the document, you’ll probably never see it.

For that reason, I think a better approach is to try to report on everything in a series of articles. I still need to try to outline what each of those articles would cover, but in a lot of ways this could make the information a lot more “digestible” for the reader. For example, one of the things that I was dissatisfied with in “What’s New in FOX 1.2″ was the grab-bag feel of some of the sections, like “Miscellaneous API Changes”. By organizing the material into a number of shorter articles, I have the opportunity to group related changes together and provide more context.
